Long-eared Sunfish
This fish drawing depicts a long-eared sunfish. It is a fish generally found in North America in freshwaters. While this black and white drawing is quite beautiful, like many sunfish, it is their coloring that truly makes them special. This species, Lepomis megalotis, has a golden-orange belly, blue and green bars on it’s head. They are relatively small and can fit almost entirely in the palm of the hand.
They get their name form the elongated opercular flap which looks a bit like an ear.
This is the first of many fish drawings I will be adding to Free Vintage Art in the coming days. It was included in A Guide to the Study of Fishes, Volume 1, which was written by David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) and published in 1905. It is of fairly good quality and a nice size to use in your projects.
