Toadfish Drawing
Another of the happy-looking fishes from the talented German artist J.F. (Johann Friedrich) Hennig (b. ca. 1778) is on offer today. It is one of several vintage fish drawings from an 1801 work. This toadfish drawing is of the species batrachus surinamensis. Like so many of the beautiful book plates, there isn’t much to be found on the fish. I only learned that it is a type of toadfish and that it is/was found off the coast of Guiana and Brazil and that the British Museum has one amongst their collections. One person called is a Surinam Toadfish.
